How this is calculated

Cash outlay counts only what you will pay. Anything your status covers is removed from the outlay and shown separately as a status saving, so it is never subtracted twice.

cash outlay = fare + taxes + uncovered bags + uncovered seat + other required fees
status savings = bag fees avoided + seat fee avoided
effective economic cost = cash outlay - (points earned x your value per point)

Status benefits come only from rules we have verified on the airline’s official pages, with the date checked. A possible upgrade is never counted as a saving. If you do not enter a value per point, we do not assume one.
