How this is calculated

nominal value per point = (cash price - cash due on award) / points required
adjusted value per point = (cash price - cash due on award
                            - value of points a cash booking would earn
                            - other benefits lost) / points required

The adjusted value is compared with your own target. Well above it: use points. Well below: pay cash, or hold if your dates are flexible. Close to it: either works, and context decides. If your balance falls short, we suggest a split where the program offers points plus cash.
